선도의 역사
1. 고대 밝돌의 역사
국선도의 역사는 아주 오랩니다. 선도의 공부법이 아득한 옛날부터 전해 내려왔습니다. 스승들로부터 전해오는 이야기로는 그 역사가 무려 9천 7백여년에 이른다고 했습니다. 우리가 아는 역사시대 훨씬 이전부터 밝돌의 공부법이 이어져 내려왔다는 뜻입니다.
아득한 옛날 우리 겨레는 참으로 아름답게 살았습니다. 서로 섬기고 사랑하며, 행복하게 살았습니다. 중국인들은 우리 겨레의 나라를 「군자국(君子國)」이라 부르며, 그 아름다운 풍속을 높이 찬양했습니다.무운도사
중국의 고서(古書) 산해경(山海經)에는 「군자국」에 관해 이런 이야기가 나옵니다.
「그 나라 사람들은 하얀 옷을 즐겨 입는다. 그들은 서로 양보하길 좋아한다. 또 바깥 나들이 할 때는 양 옆에 호랑이들을 데리고 다닌다.」
남에게 양보하길 좋아하는 사람들, 맹수의 왕 호랑이까지 감화시켜 애완견처럼 데리고 다니는 사람들, 이들이야말로 큰 깨달음을 얻은 도인(道人), 성자들 이였음이 틀림 없습니다.
옛 기록들에 따르면, 중국 고대사에 등장하는 삼황(三皇) 중 한 사람인 황제(黃帝)가 「청구」 땅 공동산에서 「자부선인」으로부터 가르침을 받았다고 합니다.
「청구」는 「군자국」처럼 우리 겨레가 세운 나라였습니다. 자부선인은 청구국의 유명 한 큰 스승이기도 했습니다.
황제가 와서 가르침을 받을 정도로 아득한 옛날의 우리 나라엔 바른 도(道)가 널리 펼쳐졌습니다. 한데, 언제부턴가 사람들이 차츰 도(道)를 멀리하게 되었습니다. 그러자, 세상은 어지러워지고, 참된 도인들은 세속을 떠나 산중에 은거하며 극소수의 사람들에게 도법(道法)을 전했습니다.
고조선 시대에 유위자(有爲子)라는 현인(賢人)이 살았습니다. 유위자는 사람들이 도를 멀리하여 세상이 혼탁해진 것을 안타까와하며 수행(修行)의 아름다운 기풍을 되살리고자 애썼습니다.
유위자의 노력으로 바른 도(道)가 한 때 세상에 소생하는 듯 했으나, 그것도 오래 가지 못했습니다. 세상 사람들은 수행자의 아름다운 삶보다 물질과 권력, 쾌락에 더 마음을 뺐겼습니다. 세상의 풍속은 점점 더 혼탁해지고 결국 고조선은 망하고 말았습니다.
2. 삼국시대의 선도
삼국시대엔 물계자라는 분이 우리의 도법(道法)을 세상에 전했습니다. 많은 사람이 그의 가르침을 받았고, 그들의 수행 전통은 화랑과 사울과 조의들에게 계승되었습니다.
신라의 화랑(화랑제도), 백제의 사울(사백제도), 고구려의 조의(조의선인제도)는 명산대천을 유람하며 자연을 벗삼아 심신(心身)을 연마했습니다. 그 결과 지(智)ㆍ인(仁)ㆍ용(勇)을 겸비한 인재들이 많이 배출되었습니다. 민족고유의 선도가 널리 펼쳐졌던 시대의 유풍(遺風)은 삼국시대를 거쳐 고려시대까지도 생활 속에 깊이 들어와 있었습니다.
신라시대의 대학자 최치원선생은 「난랑비서문」에 이런 얘길 남겼습니다.
『우리나라엔 본래 우리 고유의 신비롭고도 오묘한 도(道)가 있었다. 이름하여 풍류도 (風流道)라 일컬었는데, 이 도(道)로써 모든 백성을 교화했다.
요즘에 「풍류」의 뜻이 많이 달라졌지만, 원래 「풍류」란 우주 기운의 흐름, 대자연의 이치, 하늘의 섭리와 질서란 뜻이었다.』 풍류도는 곧 우주의 질서, 하늘의 섭리에 따라 조화롭게 살아가는 길을 듯하며, 선도의 또 다른 이름입니다.
고려시대까지 왕성했던 선도는 조선시대에 접어들면서 산중 도인들에 의해 면면히 이어져 왔습니다. 비록 세상사람들에겐 아득하게 잊혀졌지만, 도맥(道脈)의 흐름은 한번도 끊기지 않고 마르지 않는 강물처럼 흘러왔습니다.
삼라만상은 성(盛)할 때와 쇠(衰)할 때가 있습니다. 도(道) 역시 마찬가집니다. 밤이 깊어지면 새벽이 오듯, 쇠한 다음에는 다시 성(盛)하게 마련입니다.
조선조 말엽이었습니다. 이때부터 산중의 도인들께선 새 시대를 위한 준비를 하셨습니다. 산중에 숨었던 도(道)가 다시 세상으로 나올 때가 가까왔기 때문이었습니다.
조선조 말엽에 우리의 도(道)는 무운도인(無雲道人)이란 분한테 전해졌습니다. 무운도인께선 청운도인(靑雲道人)에게 도맥을 전하셨습니다.
일제침략기, 우리 겨레가 사상 초유의 혹독한 시련을 겪던 그 때는, 산중의 도인들께서 간절히 기다리시던 새 시대가 임박한 때였습니다. 해방 직후, 무운도인과 청운도인께서는 우리의 도를 세상에 다시 알릴 한 제자를 길렀습니다. 그 제자가 바로 「청산선사(일명 비경)」입니다.
3. 산을 내려온 국선도
청산선사께선 13세에 산중으로 들어가 우리의 도법을 모두 전수받은 뒤, 1967년에 하산하여 가르침을 펴기 시작했습니다. 장구한 세월동안 까맣게 잊혀졌던 우리의 도가 청산선사(비경선사)와 함께 드디어 세상으로 다시 나온 것입니다. 청산선사께선 17년 동안 많은 이들에게 우리의 도를 널리 알리시고 스승들께로 가셨습니다.
청산선사께서 처음 하산하셨을 당시, 세상 사람들은 도(道)에 별 관심이 없었습니다. 선사께선 사람들의 관심을 끌기 위해 신비로운 도력(道力)을 보여주기도 하셨습니다. 맨 손으로 바위를 깨기도 하고 알몸으로 불 속에 들어가기도 하셨습니다. 초능력을 과시하기 위해서가 아니라, 오직 우리의 도를 알리고 전하시기 위해서였습니다.
청산선사님의 초인적인 도력을 직접 목격하고서야 많은 사람들이 도에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 일본, 미국 등지에서도 관심을 갖고 청산선사님을 초빙했습니다.
청산선사께선 단(丹), 단학(丹學), 단전(丹田), 단전호흡 등의 용어도 처음으로 세상에 알리셨습니다. 그 전까지는 일반인들이 그런 용어를 전혀 몰랐습니다.
청산선사님으로 인해 비로소 알려졌고, 그 후 1980년대에 가서야 많은 수련단체들이 생겨났습니다.
청산선사께서 세상에 나오신 뒤, 36년 동안, 우리 고유의 정통 도법인 국선도는 꾸준히 사랑을 받아왔습니다. 또 많은 이들이 국선도를 수련하여 심신(心身)의 건강을 얻으며 지혜로운 삶을 살았습니다.
4. 현재의 국선도
청산선사의 재 입산으로 인하여, 민족의 선도법은 청산의 수많은 제자들에 의해 「국선도」라는 이름으로 그 도맥을 이어가며, 산중과 다른 시중에서 또 하나의 맥을 이어가고 있습니다. 물론 산중에서는 수천년의 밝돌의 민족선도가 계속 법을 이어 가고 있습니다. 즉 시중에서는 국선도가 그 법을 펼쳐나가고, 산중에서는 도인들이 고유의 밝돌법을 이어가고 있습니다.
그 외에 많은 단체들이 조직되어, 국내 및 국외의 각 지역수련원과 직장수련원 등에서 우리 민족의 문화유산인 선도를 보급하고 있습니다.
5. 국선도의 산중 도맥과 시중의 인맥
9700여 년의 역사를 가지고 이어져 내려온 도맥은 근래에는 무운(無雲)도인으로 이어 지고, 청운(靑雲) 도인을 거쳐 청산(靑山, 秘境)도인에게 이어졌습니다.
청운(靑雲)도인(본명 이송운, 경상북도 안동 출신)이 청산(靑山,秘境)도인에게 전수한 도법은 천기도인으로부터 전수된 우리 민족 고유의 단리인 정기신 삼단 단전이단호흡을 초공으로하여 자연호흡으로 완성하는 천인묘합의 경지까지 승화하는 도법입니다.
산중에서 시중으로 내려온 밝돌법은 국선도라는 이름으로 수많은 지도자를 통해 계속 이어지고 있으며, 앞으로도 여러 지도자로 발전을 거듭해가며 세계 여러 나라로 전해질 것입니다.
